Zeekr and Mobileye to launch self-driving cars by 2024

Geely-owned Zeekr has partnered with Mobileye to launch self-driving vehicles by 2024 that require limited human interaction.

There are six levels of vehicle autonomy and vehicles with Level 3 autonomous features are already legal in the UK thanks to the introduction of new Automated Lane Keeping Systems (ALKS) regulations.

At Level 3, the driver is permitted to take their hands off the wheel and eyes off the road, but is expected to be ready to take back control if required in case of malfunction or error.

However, Zeekr and Mobileye are aiming to introduce Level 4 autonomous technology, which can handle the majority of driving scenarios and can intervene with safety protocols in the event of an incident or a system failure, without interaction from a driver.

Level 4 vehicles are still fitted with the option for drivers to take back manual control.

While these Zeekr electric vehicles will be able to operate autonomously, they can only do so in markets where the legislation allows them to operate on public roads or in geofenced areas.

Andy An, Zeekr Intelligent Technology chief executive, said: “Mobileye has been a strategic partner to our mission of delivering lifestyle vehicles fit for a more sustainable and autonomous future of transportation.

“Our partnership supports Zeekr and Mobileye’s shared ambitions for leading the global advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle (AV) industry.”

Zeekr was founded in early 2021 as a global technology-mobility brand with design and engineering capabilities in Sweden.

The first model from Zeekr, the 001, was introduced in April 2021 with deliveries starting in October of the same year.

The collaboration between Zeekr and Mobileye follows on from the company’s recent announcement it has also partnered with Waymo to create an autonomous ride hailing EV.

The new vehicle is hoped to be first deployed in the US as part of Waymo’s One autonomous ride-hailing fleet.

Mobileye has already been testing self-driving vehicles in cities like Paris:
