Boardman heads up Active Travel England (ATE) which oversees delivery as part of its ambition to drive up the standards of infrastructure across the country and make walking, wheeling and cycling the easiest choice for local journeys.

It also manages the national active travel budget, awarding funding for projects that meet the new national standards set out in 2020.

ATE will also nspect, and publish reports on, highway authorities for their performance on active travel, and identify particularly dangerous failings in their highways for cyclists and pedestrians.

Commenting on his role, Boardman said: “To help change the travel culture of a nation is by far the most important thing I have ever, or will ever, be involved in.

“For cycling and walking to become the natural choice for shorter journeys, people must feel safe and the options must be easy.

“Active Travel England aims to help local authorities across the country deliver that environment, so that people can get to schools, shops and workplaces under their own steam. That’s the kind of place people want to live and the freedoms they want for their children.”

The Smart Transport National Conference will provide public sector transport policymakers with a unique opportunity to meet with peers and learn from other local authorities’ best practice case studies of developing transport systems.

Private sector delegates will hear from public sector transport policymakers on the key challenges they face and take part in high-level debate to discover how private sector innovation and technology can help turn local and national government policy vision into reality.
