International technology company Leonardo is partnering to deliver a major bus network modernisation programme in Italy’s Tuscany region.
The move reflects the company’s growing influence in the transport sector and its broader commitment to sustainable transport.
Under the collaboration, Leonardo is acting as technology partner for Italian transport management company Autolinee Toscane, which is responsible for all urban and extra-urban public transport by road across Tuscany.
The modernisation programme, which began in summer 2021, involves the integration, monitoring and management of over 950 bus lines. These lines, which cover 24,000km, encompass 2,600 buses and 37,000 stops.
Technology provided by Leonardo includes:
- Latest-generation on-board fleet management systems for buses. These integrate all of the functionality required to manage the vehicle as part of a wider fleet in a single device.
- An advanced back office platform for control centres which assists with service planning, monitoring, real-time operations and performance management.
The collaboration between Leonardo and Autolinee Toscane has already seen the successful transition from legacy software systems to a new cloud platform hosted on Leonardo’s digital infrastructure at its Genoa site.
This migration took place without any disruption to services, despite the high level of complexity and short deadline.
Leonardo’s platform guarantees a high level of availability, allowing Autolinee Toscane to monitor the fleet 24x7x365 and provide predicted arrival times at bus stops. The service is managed across the whole of the Tuscany region from this central system.
Upcoming project milestones will see Leonardo supply around 3,000 on-board devices and complete the integration of several different legacy management systems.
These include software for service planning, a central ticketing system, on-board ticket validators, bus stop and on-board displays and the information system for the Regional Mobility and Transport Observatory.
In addition, Leonardo will deliver staff training, professional services and system maintenance for the next ten years.
This ambitious project will draw on Leonardo’s extensive experience in transportation sector technology.
Autolinee Toscane will harness Leonardo’s innovative fleet management solutions to ensure passengers benefit from reliable, comfortable, sustainable and inter-connected transportation. The programme demonstrates Leonardo's commitment to delivering efficient and sustainable solutions in the transport and urban mobility sectors.
