Hyundai reveals last mile delivery robot

Hyundai has revealed a new electric robot that could be used for last mile delivery applications in the future.

The Mobile Eccentric Droid (MobED) platform features four large wheels  with independent suspension that Hyundai says enables stable movement even on inclined and uneven roads.

This suspension allows the platform to move through complex urban environments by freely adjusting its wheelbase and steering angles.

Dong Jin Hyun, Head of Hyundai Motor Group Robotics Lab, said: “We have developed the MobED platform to overcome the limitations of existing indoor guide and service robots while maximising its usability in cities by dramatically improving the platform’s overall mobility.

“We are also looking ahead to assess how potential users of MobED will further expand their needs and use for this type of technology.”

The robot can expand and retract its wheelbase for going from higher speed driving to lower-speed maneuvering in more complex scenarios.

The MobED has a top speed of 19mph and it can drive for four hours on a single charge, with a battery capacity of 2kWh.

Hyundai said that while the platform can be used for logistics companies, its modular design means it can also be used as an electric mobility vehicle for passenger rides too, much like an e-scooter.
