Frank Muehlon, ABB head of e-mobility infrastructure solutions for ABB, believes commercially available electric vehicle chargers up to 800 volts in the next two years.
Muehlon, who is a member of Smart Transport, spoke with Forbes in a wide ranging interview discussing the potential for electric vehicle battery technology and how motorsport will influence the cars of the future.
ABB is title sponsor for the all-electric race series Formula E.
Rapid chargers are now being built up to 350kW to charge electric vehicles up to 80% in around 20 minutes.
While components are available for 400v charging systems today, Muehlon believes this will double in capacity within a couple of years to cut charging times dramatically.
The Government has pledged £500 million over the next five years to support the rollout of a fast charging network for plug-in vehicles.
It said the investment would ensure drivers will never be further than 30 miles from a rapid charging station.
This will include a Rapid Charging Fund to help businesses with the cost of connecting fast charge points to the electricity grid.
