Decarbon8 urges better funded strategies and commitments for the road to net zero

Greg Marsden

A new policy briefing by Decarbon8 suggests nowhere in the UK is currently on track to bring transport emissions down in line with carbon budgets set out in legislation and national policy.

The briefing, Everything Counts: Why transport infrastructure emissions matter for decision makers, says funded and credible strategies and commitments are needed before it can determine whether specific projects or programmes are appropriate in carbon terms.

Greg Marsden, Professor of Transport Governance, Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds and director of the DecarboN8 Research Network, co-authored the report and he will be speaking at the next Smart Transport Conference on 10 May at The Queens Hotel in Leeds.

Marsden is taking part in a breakout session looking at place based solutions to help decarbonise transport, with a particular focus on Northern cities.

The research in the briefing quantifies the embodied emissions involved in building and maintaining typical transport infrastructure, taking into account sustainable alternative materials and a steadily decarbonising electrical grid.

The authors of the report said: “This new evidence can help provide clarity around the costs and benefits of transport infrastructure projects.

“The significant scale of embodied emissions from infrastructure will be of interest to those involved in early-stage decision making, to ensure new schemes do not undermine national and local climate ambitions.”

Decarbon8 is holding a free online workshop on 18 March for a Q&A with all the reports’ authors to reflect on the findings from industry and government.
